Classes

Currently, SJC Customs Training has CBE classes scheduled.

October 2010 Customs Broker License Exam “Advanced Prep” Begins Tuesday, July 6, San Bruno, CA

SJC launches its Advanced Prep class on Tuesday, July 6, 5:30 pm, for those planning to take the U.S. Customs Broker License Examination scheduled for October 4, 2010.  Unlike other courses, this intensive, fast-moving class is designed specifically for those exam candidates who have ALREADY taken the CBE at least one time.  (Graduates of the “Early Start” HTSUS Class may also be eligible.)

The Advanced Prep class will move quickly from the basics of a core topic to exceptions and nuances reflected in the regulations that often appear on challenging CBE questions.  Substantially more time will be devoted to taking and reviewing previous CBE questions and analyzing regulatory and exam language.  Participants will be expected not only to have practiced with numerous questions as homework but also to raise, respond to and discuss issues offered by the instructor and fellow participants.

Registration fees:

Registration fees will be based on one of  two variables: 1) # of times the participant has taken the CBE OR 2) whether the participant has taken previous SJC classes.  For those taking the exam a second time who have not attended an SJC class previously, the fee will be $750.  For those taking the exam a third or fourth time, the fee will be $500, and for those who have taken SJC’s main preparation class, the fee will be $250.   Please contact SJC at (650) 616 – 4407 for more details on pricing.

Two venues are currently available for the Advanced Prep class: San Bruno (Regus Business Center, 1001 Bayhill Drive) and Santa Clara (Intel, 2200 Mission College Boulevard).   Please indicate on the sign-up form which of the two venues you prefer.  Each venue will be limited to 10 participants maximum.   A tenative schedule is posted below.

Early Start” for April 2011 CBE Begins November, 2010, San Bruno, California

SJC offers two related CBE preparation courses–the “Early Start” course which typically begins at least five (5) months before the official exam date and the “Advanced Preparation” course, which begins approximately three months before the exam (see below).  For those taking the CBE for the first time, eligibility for the Adavanced Preparation course is contingent upon completion of  “Early Start”.

The simple goal of “Early Start” is to establish competence in HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States) Classification and thereby boost significantly the participant’s chances of passing the CBE.  Because the CBE’s Classification Section typically counts for 20 to 25% of the score, performing competently–answering well more than half the section correctly–is virtually a requirement to be able to pass the exam.

Class Content

“Early Start” consists of 7 class sessions with an introductory session (open to all) and a follow-up review session prior to the start of the Advanced Preparation course in July.  Each class lasts three hours during which the student is an active participant.  Most classes will involve answering several classification questions either on written tests or in instructor led dialogue.   Because of the amount and complexity of the material that must be covered, class size will be limited to five (5) students,  thereby allowing sufficient time and attention to work through concepts and issues.
